History - Artshow
The Rotary Club of Yea Art Show

The Yea Chamber of Commerce held their first outdoor Art Show in 1971 and functioned well until 1986 when several meetings failed to get a quorum. Ray Watson (Beaufort Manor) was in the Chamber of Commerce as well as a Rotarian and he suggested we take the Art Show on board as we were looking for a project this being our first year.

All relevant papers and artists’ names were dropped at our Community Service Director’s home on a Friday night, the last week in November, the Art Show being on 26th, 27th and 28th of December.

After a busy 2 or 3 hours sorting all the gear out I arrived at The Yea Chronicle office to talk to Ash Long whose help l needed. We agreed even at this late hour it was a must that we run it from a continuity point of view or we may lose it.

A new letter was written to inform the artists that it was still on, the entry fees etc. and it was all posted by 12 o'clock. Great credit to Ash Long.

I am not sure of the number of artists we contacted but we considered ourselves lucky as the entries kept coming in. Our approach was to run the show as best we could, learn from it and at least we had laid our claim to that day.

The Art Show stands were stored at the Butter Factory and I asked at a meeting could 3 or 4 chaps give me a hand on Saturday morning to sort it out - about 20 members arrived to help. That I will never forget.

When the show opened we noticed everyone was asking where the painting was for the raffle; that's how much we were with it! We purchased a nice painting by Lola Anderson which was very reasonably priced and away we went.

Each night we had to take down the paintings and store them at Graeme and Marion Bruere's shed and put them out again each day. We used Brendan Dignam's trailer and had a large coil of plastic bubble insulation – one layer of paintings one layer of insulation and so on. Our first year exceeded my expectation when we had a profit of $ 1809. I realised after the Art Show that the support was greater than I had experienced before.

The second year we went indoors in the Shire Hall, which was a ‘learn again’ experience.

As each year goes another Director runs The Art Show and each one had 100% support that is probably why in a good year we hover around the $10,000 mark.
